Our School History

Memories pressed between the pages of our mind ...

Capitol Middle SchoolCapitol Middle was constructed in 1950 at 4200 Capitol Avenue, now called Gus Young Avenue.  It was originally Capitol Avenue High School, having grades 7-12.  The first principal was Mr. Charles W. Keel.  In the fall of 1959, when the new Capitol High opened on North 23rd, Capitol Junior-Senior High was renamed Capitol Junior High.  At that time, the school housed 7th and 8th grades, and the  principal was Mr. Milton Simmons.

Former principals include:  Mr. Womack Rucker, Sr., Mr. Charles Stevenson, Mr. Ollie Joe Brown, Mrs. Jane W. Gillette, Mr. Herman Brister, Mrs. Shedricka Brunson-Green, Mrs. Katie Blunschi, and presently, Mr. Lamont Cole.

Capitol has seen a number of changes since its inception, and beginning in the school year 04-05, the name Capitol Middle will be transferred to a new building, not far from the old.  The old building will continue on as the temporary site for McKinnley Middle for the next two years.

Though the building's name will be changed, and the building eventually torn down, memories will keep the "old" Capitol Middle alive, while many new, wonderful ones will be for the making just down the road.
